Angus Barn’s Chocolate Chess Pie

Happy Pi Day!  In honor of the day, I made pie.  um. obviously.

I had no idea what Angus Barn was.  Upon a quick search, I found that it is a restaurant in North Carolina and they have been serving this pie for 30 years.  Too bad I probably won’t be going there, because if this pie is any indication, the food is delicious!

The reason I wanted to make this pie is two-fold:  1. it’s easy and B. it’s chocolate.

Not sure why it’s called “Chess Pie”….?

This pie comes together in a matter of minutes – especially if you use store bought pie crusts like I do.  It will take a few more minutes if you make your own pastry.

Creamy, chocolatey, it’s almost like an under-done brownie pie.  Sort of chocolate pecan pie without the nuts? Hard to describe but delicious!!

Have you ever been to Angus Barn?  Leave a comment and brag about it!

Angus Barn’s Chocolate Chess Pie

Source:  I saw it at LuLu the Baker

  • 1 unbaked pie shell for a 9 inch pie, I used store bought, but you can use your favorite recipe
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter
  • 2 squares (2 oz) semi-sweet chocolate or 1/3 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • a pinch of salt
  • whipped cream and sprinkles for garnish

Preheat oven to 350º.

Melt the butter and chocolate.  I used a saucepan over low heat, you can try the microwave if you want.  If using the microwave, check every 15-30 seconds to make sure you don’t burn it.  Go until it’s almost melted then stir until completely melted.

In another bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, vanilla and salt.  Add to the chocolate mixture and whisk until well combined.

Pour into the unbaked pie crust and bake for 35 minutes.

Let it cool completely before topping with whipped cream and serving.  Store any leftovers in the fridge.
